#1 The Girl With All The Gifts By: M. R. Carey
“I don’t believe in the kind of magic in my books, but I believe something very magical can happen when you read a good book.”- JK Rowling. I also believe that something magical happens when you read the right book. That is why in this essay I will be helping you find that magic in one of these books, telling you everything you need to know about the three I have chosen, from who the author is, to book ratings, starting with The Girl With All The Gifts by M.R Carey.
About the author:
Mike Carey was born in Liverpool, England in 1959. As a child Carey always had an interest in comics and writing and drawing stories for his younger brother. As an adult he studied English at St. Peter’s college, oxford before becoming a teacher. He continued teaching for 15 years before becoming a writer.
Why I chose this book:
From the first chapter I was hooked, it left me full of questions as the plot began. The main character Melanie, is so lifelike and relatable, full of curiosity and high spirited. This book had me at the edge of my seat eagerly anticipating what was to come next.
Synopsis:
Every day Melanie waits in her cell to be collected for class. Sometimes while she waits she wonders about the locked door at the end of the hall and where it goes. When the sergeant and his men come, she walks to her wheelchair and is patient and still as they strap her in, making sure she cannot move. She used to say hello during this process, now she simply waits in silence wondering why the sergeant’s men would be so afraid of a little girl.
